This event is part of the series CRITICAL FRIDAYS. Here, we move beyond the outdated separation of body, mind, and soul and instead explore embodied cognition and the cognitive powers of the somatic. The focus is on the body as a medium for artistic and ritual practices. We foster dialogues with experts from the fields of science, art, and care work. Performances, workshops, readings, and film screenings serve as our starting point for collective reflections, in which we bridge the gap between closeness and distance, between personal experiences and avant-garde cultural theories.
Ever since the Renaissance, art and eroticism have been engaged in a passionate liaison. One is kissed by the muse; the gaze scans images with voyeuristic delight; etymologically, the word “brush” derives from “penis”; and works of art are born. Pornography, on the other hand, is regarded as an aesthetic that is neither particularly erotic nor artistic; here, it is more about forms of predictable hypervisuality with the sole purpose of facilitating ejaculation. But when pornography is presented as art films to queer-feminist-trained eyes at the Porny Days Film Art Festival—what happens here? And what happens in the many other art, workshop, and event formats we attend at the festival? How do we talk about images that break with viewing habits and conventions of sexuality? And what do the festival’s various films and events trigger (in us)?
While porn usually serves to get your hands down your pants, we urge you: Put your hand on your heart and your hand on your brain! On Sunday afternoon, following the legendary Sweat & Glitter Party, we’ll take time to share our festival experiences and invite you to join a discussion with experts in philosophy, aesthetics, dance, and directing. Despite all the analytical examination and discussion of content, perspectives, (re)presentations, and conventions, the focus should always remain on the personal and individual—perhaps even intimate—experience at the festival and our collective reflection on it. Feel free to ask or share what turns us on or off, how we experience other people or the community at the festival, what—perhaps even confrontational or transformative—experiences we had in the cinema or in the darkroom at the festival party, and how the festival as a whole functions on all levels of experience. In the spirit of the Critical Fridays series, we seek to move beyond the outdated separation of body, mind, and soul.
