AYOTO ATARAXIA: SEXUAL LIBERATION AND OTHER COMPULSIONS

This event is part of the series CRITICAL FRIDAYS. Here, the outdated separation of body, mind and soul is dispensed with and instead questions are asked about embodied cognition and the cognitive powers of the somatic. The focus is on the body as a medium for artistic and ritual practices. We create dialogs with experts from the fields of science, art and care work. Performances, workshops, readings and film screenings serve as a starting point for joint reflections in which an arc is drawn between closeness and distance, between personal experiences and avant-garde cultural theories.

In his film "My Film with Andrei, Or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Document a Sex Party", photographer, podcaster, author and filmmaker Ayoto Ataraxia portrays a group of young men from a hedonistic, sex-positive movement in Berlin who organize an orgy on the occasion of their friend Andrei's birthday. But "to be blunt, the orgy does not take place - at least not in this film" warns Felix Ruckert in a review of the film: "Ataraxia's view of the confusion and forlornness of its protagonists is postcoital and marked by melancholy and desperation that sometimes turns into cynicism. Its heroines are both dramatic and banal, opulent and cheap, just like the cell phone cameras with which the whole film was shot." What emerges here is "Ataraxia's high art of endurance and compassion, his affection and tenderness for a masculinity in the process of detoxification, a masculinity that has lost and must eventually pass away." In conversation with director Ataraxia, we want to talk about new constraints of sexual liberation, about his coexistence with the protagonists, the trust he has gained, the distanced view of his film, as well as about the representability of an orgy and its relevance.
