AYOTO ATARAXIA: SEXUAL LIBERATION AND OTHER CONSTRAINTS

This event is part of the series CRITICAL FRIDAYS. Here, we move beyond the outdated separation of body, mind, and soul and instead explore embodied cognition and the cognitive powers of the somatic. The focus is on the body as a medium for artistic and ritual practices. We foster dialogues with experts from the fields of science, art, and care work. Performances, workshops, readings, and film screenings serve as our starting point for collective reflections, in which we bridge the gap between closeness and distance, between personal experiences and avant-garde cultural theories.

In his film *My Film with Andrei, Or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Document a Sex Party*, photographer, podcaster, author, and filmmaker Ayoto Ataraxia portrays a group of young men associated with a hedonistic, sex-positive movement in Berlin who organize an orgy to celebrate their friend Andrei’s birthday. But “to be blunt, the orgy does not take place—at least not in this film,” Felix Ruckert warns in a review of the film: “Ataraxia’s view of the confusion and forlornness of its protagonists is postcoital and marked by melancholy and desperation that sometimes turns into cynicism. Its heroines are both dramatic and banal, opulent and cheap, just like the cell phone cameras with which the entire film was shot.” What emerges here is “Ataraxia’s high art of endurance and compassion, his affection and tenderness for a masculinity in the process of detoxification, a masculinity that has lost its way and must eventually fade away.” In conversation with director Ataraxia, we want to discuss the new constraints of sexual liberation, his coexistence with the protagonists, the trust that was built, the detached perspective of his film, as well as the representability of an orgy and its relevance.
