DANIELA REINA TÉLLEZ: BODY TERRITORY – DECOLONIZING HEALTH & SELF-CARE

  • serrat(u)s bodywork – Zurich 40 Zwinglistrasse Zurich, ZH, 8004 Switzerland (Map)

This event is part of the series CRITICAL FRIDAYS. Here, we move beyond the outdated separation of body, mind, and soul and instead explore embodied cognition and the cognitive powers of the somatic. The focus is on the body as a medium for artistic and ritual practices. We foster dialogues with experts from the fields of science, art, and care work. Performances, workshops, readings, and film screenings serve as our starting point for collective reflections, in which we bridge the gap between closeness and distance, between personal experiences and avant-garde cultural theories.

Daniela Reina Téllez, also known as Dana Mara, is interested in the body as a territory and as a space where (de)colonization processes take place. As a brown PoC migrant, artist, and bodyworker in Europe, she aims to create a space where the following questions gain visibility: What colonialist-racist and culturally appropriated continuities are still practiced and perpetuated in the fields of bodywork and wellness? To what extent are these continuities exerted upon our bodies, and what might liberation through our own physicality look like?

As a Cuentera (storyteller), she draws attention to the approaches and practices of self-care that have been devalued and excluded by colonial history and the resulting Eurocentric worldview. When we talk about privilege, aren’t we really talking about rights? About well-being, health, and pleasure? How can the original intention of self-care be reclaimed by structurally disadvantaged groups, and what will self-care look like in a post-capitalist future?
