DANIELA REINA TÉLLEZ: CUERPO TERRITORIO - DECOLONIZING HEALTH & SELFCARE

  • serrat(u)s bodywork - Zurich 40 Zwinglistrasse Zurich, ZH, 8004 Zurich, Switzerland (map)

This event is part of the series CRITICAL FRIDAYS. Here, the outdated separation of body, mind and soul is dispensed with and instead questions are asked about embodied cognition and the cognitive powers of the somatic. The focus is on the body as a medium for artistic and ritual practices. We create dialogs with experts from the fields of science, art and care work. Performances, workshops, readings and film screenings serve as a starting point for joint reflections in which an arc is drawn between closeness and distance, between personal experiences and avant-garde cultural theories.

Daniela Reina Téllez, also known as Dana Mara, is interested in the body as a territory and as a place in which (de)colonization processes take place. As a brown PoC migrant, artist and bodyworker in Europe, she wants to create a space in which the following questions gain visibility: What colonialist-racist and culturally appropriated continuities continue to be practiced and perpetuated in the fields of bodywork and wellness? To what extent are these continuities exerted on our bodies and what could liberation through our own physicality look like?

As a cuentera (storyteller), she recalls the approaches and practices of self-care that have been devalued and excluded by colonial history and the resulting Eurocentric worldview. When we talk about privilege, aren't we really talking about rights? To well-being, health, pleasure? How can the original intention of self-care be re-appropriated by structurally disadvantaged groups and what does self-care look like in a post-capitalist future?
