FELIX RUCKERT & YAEL STORMBORN: RESTRICTION & ENTANGLEMENT - ROPE BONDAGE AS ARTISTIC EXPLORATION & SOCIAL PRACTICE

  • serrat(u)s bodywork - Zurich 40 Zwinglistrasse Zurich, ZH, 8004 Zurich, Switzerland (map)

Graphics: Dorian Delnon & Michael Müller

This event is part of the series CRITICAL FRIDAYS. Here, the outdated separation of body, mind and soul is dispensed with and instead questions are asked about embodied cognition and the cognitive powers of the somatic. The focus is on the body as a medium for artistic and ritual practices. We create dialogs with experts from the fields of science, art and care work. Performances, workshops, readings and film screenings serve as a starting point for joint reflections in which an arc is drawn between closeness and distance, between personal experiences and avant-garde cultural theories.

The event will be held in English.

The popularity of bondage with ropes is on the rise in Europe. For many people, bondage seems to be a pleasurable exploration of their own and other people's bodies. Bondage allows access to creative work, expression, play and intense human encounters. Bondage also inspires many people to explore artistic practices such as performance or photography for the first time.

As a dancer and choreographer, Felix Ruckert (Berlin) represents the artistically committed side of the European community and sees rope bondage as both an art form and a profound social practice. For Felix, bondage is living sculpture, dynamic composition, theatrical process, sensual encounter and intimate communication. His fascination lies in this complexity. Felix therefore explores the practice of rope bondage in open-ended processes, absorbing above all the technical, aesthetic and conceptual ideas and innovations that represent the cultural richness of the European context, while at the same time investigating their potential to enrich the Japanese tradition. In addition to the reinterpretation and expansion of traditional practices, Felix is therefore particularly interested in creative experimentation, research, unconventional approaches and interdisciplinary thinking: the courage to take artistic risks and the joy of failure. He also places particular emphasis on an intense engagement with the affective and interpersonal aspects of practice, seeking to create the tools for a powerful exploration of emotional landscapes and for deepening a culture of communication, collaboration and consent. Felix strives to understand the parameters of this potentially transformative experience.

Yael Stormborn (Los Angeles), who has extensive experience as an aerialist, performer and rope model, brings her perspective as a US-based artist and researcher. Yael performs in many underground fetish clubs in Los Angeles, for Playa Alchemist at Burning Man, and is also a daughter of The House of Red Velvet, an erotic, surreal dark art performance collective in Los Angeles. When she discovered rope bondage, it was a pivotal point for Yael to translate and decode the similarities and connections between aerial arts and rope bondage, creating a lexicon that is easier to explore for both the tops and bottoms of the ropes. As a kink performer, she is particularly interested in creating and sharing the work she makes with her body and how that impacts her role as a cultural provocateur. Artistically, Yael's work is largely influenced by eroticism and the exploration of abandonment, often playing with proximity, perspective and the intersection of light, sound and touch to evoke an emotional response.

The event is a lecture with some demonstrations and possibly also a trial session for the curious...
