This event is part of the series CRITICAL FRIDAYS. Here, we move beyond the outdated separation of body, mind, and soul and instead explore embodied cognition and the cognitive powers of the somatic. The focus is on the body as a medium for artistic and ritual practices. We foster dialogues with experts from the fields of science, art, and care work. Performances, workshops, readings, and film screenings serve as our starting point for collective reflections, in which we bridge the gap between closeness and distance, between personal experiences and avant-garde cultural theories.
The event will be held in English.
The popularity of rope bondage is growing steadily in Europe. For many people, bondage seems to be a pleasurable way to explore their own bodies and those of others. Bondage opens the door to creative work, self-expression, play, and intense human connections. It also inspires many people to engage with artistic practices such as performance art or photography for the first time.
As a dancer and choreographer, Felix Ruckert (Berlin) represents the artistically engaged side of the European community and views rope bondage as both an art form and a profound social practice. For Felix, bondage is living sculpture, dynamic composition, a theatrical process, a sensual encounter, and intimate communication. His fascination lies in this complexity. Felix therefore explores the practice of rope bondage through open-ended processes, drawing primarily on the technical, aesthetic, and conceptual ideas and innovations that represent the cultural richness of the European context, while simultaneously examining their potential to enrich Japanese tradition. In addition to reinterpreting and expanding traditional practices, Felix is particularly interested in creative experimentation, research, unconventional approaches, and interdisciplinary thinking: the courage to take artistic risks and the joy of failure. He also places particular emphasis on an intensive engagement with the affective and interpersonal aspects of practice, seeking to create the tools for a powerful exploration of emotional landscapes and for deepening a culture of communication, collaboration, and mutual understanding. Felix strives to understand the parameters of this potentially transformative experience.
Yael Stormborn (Los Angeles), who has extensive experience as an aerial acrobat, performer, and rope model, brings her perspective as a U.S.-based artist and researcher. Yael performs at many underground fetish clubs in Los Angeles, for Playa Alchemist at Burning Man, and is also a member of The House of Red Velvet, an erotic, surrealist dark art performance collective in Los Angeles. When she discovered rope bondage, it was a turning point for Yael to translate and decipher the similarities and connections between aerial arts and rope bondage, and to create a lexicon that is easier to explore for both rope tops and bottoms. As a kink performer, she is particularly interested in creating and sharing the work she does with her body, and how that impacts her role as a cultural provocateur. Artistically, Yael’s work is largely influenced by eroticism and the exploration of abandonment, often playing with intimacy, perspective, and the intersection of light, sound, and touch to evoke an emotional response.
The event consists of a presentation with a few demonstrations and possibly a trial session for those who are interested...
