FILIPPA FRICK: HAPTOLOGY - EXPLORATIONS OF TOUCH, INTENTION & INNER ATTITUDE

  • serrat(u)s bodywork – Zurich 40 Zwinglistrasse Zurich, ZH, 8004 Switzerland (Map)

Do you feel me, sense me...? – The tactile and haptic sensibility of our bodies keeps us in a tangible connection—throughout our lives and without interruption—with our surroundings—and with ourselves. Touch is essential, vital, and fundamental to who we are and what we are, and to how we engage with the world and the other beings in it. Yet as central as it is to our identity and our coexistence with other people, in our everyday consciousness it usually appears more as a necessity—to achieve a goal, fulfill a formality, or bring about a result. We touch and handle tools, shake hands, perform hygiene routines, and are touched for medical examinations and physiological treatments—even in the context of relationships and sexuality, our approach is often, regrettably, goal-oriented. Yet it is well worth taking the time to thoroughly examine and experience touch simply for the sake of feeling itself and self-awareness. There is, in fact, a great deal to discover—about touch itself, about ourselves, and about others.

In this course, we’ll explore, through various exercises and experiments, how our inner attitude, our own needs, and our intentions influence the quality of our touch. How do we touch others when we’re aware of these influences? How can we balance our attention between ourselves and the other person so that, even while touching, we remain true to ourselves and our own needs?

In our collaborative research, the focus is not on techniques, treatment principles, anatomy, or “doing it right,” but rather on curiosity, trying things out, and experimentation. We take plenty of time to explore our own haptic and tactile worlds and, through dialogue with others, learn more about them bit by bit, gaining a deeper understanding of the topic of touch in all its complexity and how it is shaped by sociocultural influences, gender issues, psycho-emotional aspects, and much more.

In this way, we want to create an opportunity to practice and develop our inner attitude toward touch—ultimately, quite simply, to find more joy in it! And joy in daring to follow our own curiosity and impulses, while at the same time experiencing how enriching a more mindful kind of touch can be. In doing so, we’ll try to find our own balance between giving and receiving, and to make much more room for mindfulness and attentiveness in our touches. Feel me, sense me—but really!

NOTES ON THE EVENT

The goals of our events are collaborative learning within the group, supporting shared processes, and personal development. Couples and all other types of partnerships or arrangements are welcome, but you should be aware and open to the fact that the courses are not designed as partnership experiences and that we address each person as an individual. For example: To involve all participants equally, we usually work with randomly assigned partner combinations during the exercises. This means there will be both same-sex and opposite-sex pairings. Participants should generally be open to working with any person and any body. Exceptions can be discussed on a case-by-case basis.

Gender identity, sexual orientation, age or membership of often marginalized groups such as BBIPoC, migrants, refugees, LGBTQIA*, disabled people, etc. are not criteria when registering and selecting participants. This means that, in principle, everyone is equally welcome and we endeavor to do justice to the respective constellation and different needs, but our resources are limited. If you have any questions in this regard, please contact us.

We expect you to act with care, be communicative, prioritize consent, and be mindful, and we encourage you to respect your own boundaries and take personal responsibility.
Hate speech will not be tolerated. Please bring “Candy Speech” with you.
We reserve the right to ask participants to leave the workshop if their behavior is harmful or overly problematic, and we reserve the right to do so without explanation—though we will likely try to explain it. The workshop fees would then be refunded in full. Any further claims are excluded.

You can read more about this topic here.
