With the SHIBARI MASTERCLASSES we present excellent contemporary shibari artists from Europe and beyond to the advanced shibari community in Zurich. For the fourth issue of this new series by end of 2022, we are very glad to invite NICOLAS YOROÏ from Brussels – one of the most experienced and recognized riggers in Europe, who will present his unique practice of organic Kinbaku.

Organic Kinbaku

- Life, humans and nature are not square. Why should rope art be? -

This workshop will be based on static bondage. More specifically, we are going to work very internally, in subtle motion. The point will be to develop a very organic style of· bondage, to transform the body to a nearly plant-like state; surviving and evolving through a restrictive environment.

Visually, we will work around dividing rules that you can find in Ikebana and Bonsai art. By mimicking the shape of nature, or drawing inspiration for contortions, we can create unbalanced designs and breathing challenges for the person inside the ropes.

Internally, for both the tying person and their partner, it will be about making and taking space. It is one of the best workshops I offer to work around listening, calmness, and body manipulation/awareness.

Life is about a spiral, and spiral will be one of our main tools. You can find them anywhere; from the galaxy to our DNA, but also inside our ropes! Riggers are going to put this motion and feeling inside themselves to offer it to their partner through rope.

Posture and position will also be studied through the concept of MA. This workshop leads to a thoughtful and contemplative way of tying and being tied.

DISCLAIMER

The goals of our events are group learning and support for shared processes, as well as personal development. Couples and all other types of partnerships or group dynamics are welcome, but please be aware and open to the fact that the courses are not designed as partnership experiences and that we address each person as an individual. For example: to ensure that all participants are included equally, we typically use randomly assigned partner combinations during the exercises. This means there will be both same-gender and opposite-gender pairings. Participants should generally be open to working with anyone and any body. Exceptions can be discussed on a case-by-case basis.

Gender identity, sexual orientation, age, or membership in groups that are often marginalized—such as Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BBIPoC), migrants, refugees, LGBTQIA*, and people with disabilities—are not criteria for registration or participant selection. This means that, in principle, everyone is equally welcome, and we strive to accommodate the diverse composition of participants and their varying needs; however, our resources are limited. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions.

We expect you to be careful, communicative, consent-oriented, and mindful, and we encourage you to respect your own boundaries and take personal responsibility.
Hate speech will not be tolerated. Please bring "candy speech." We reserve the right to ask participants to leave the workshop if their behavior is hurtful or overly problematic, and we reserve the right to do so without explanation—though we will likely try to explain. Workshop fees will then be refunded in full. Further claims are excluded.

Read more about this here.
